Website Success with Google Analytics

Written by: Dustin Ackart at Elemeno Design in Kansas City, MO

You would be surprised to know how many business websites exist without the owners or employees knowing anything about their website’s statistics.  Are you one of those???

There are many tools available online that can give you incredible details about your website traffic which can be used to market your business in a smarter direction.  One of the most widely used and most valuable (considering it is free!) is Google Analytics - www.google.com/analytics/

Google’s Analytics program is simple to install with a little basic knowledge of html. If you are using Wordpress, there are multiple plugins that can be utilized to make the connection.  Once the connection to your account is established, Analytics will be tracking every single move that is made on your website, and it can tell you everything that you would ever want to know about how your customers are finding you.

You could spend all day learning the ins and outs of the program, but even just at its base, you can find out extremely critical indicators about your site’s effectiveness.  These are just a few:
  • ·         Total traffic on your website.
  • ·         How long those visitors stayed on the site.
  • ·         What pages were viewed.
  • ·         Bounce Rate (which is how many visitors landed on your website and jumped right out).
  • ·         What cities your viewers are in.
  • ·         What keywords or phrases brought them to your website.
  • ·         Were those visits from organic rankings, paid rankings or direct  visits?
  • ·         Are viewers getting to your website through your social media outlets?
  • ·         What type of browser was the viewer using?

That list is only scratching the surface of the kinds of data that can be collected with Google Analytics.

A website can be a marketing machine for you if you look at this data.  You can easily spot pages and/or keywords that are helping or hurting your website’s effectiveness.

Google Analytics is also extremely helpful when you are looking at the effectiveness of some of your marketing strategies.  If you are marketing in a particular area of a city or part of the country and your goal is to get customers to your website, you can see if there is an increase in the amount of traffic from that area.  If you are not getting the results you were looking for, you can change your marketing direction to make it more effective and log those results.

The web has allowed us to pinpoint market directly to our customers, and there is no reason that you should not know exactly how effective your website is in doing that.  Don’t let your website hang out on the web without it working for you.
