Business Networking: Finding the Right Balance

Business networking is the life blood of the small business owner. You can have the best product or company on the planet, but you must foster the personal relationships – they are the seeds to success. At the same time, to ignore

the impact of online social relationships is dangerous. More than 200 million people are on Twitter and Facebook accounts for nearly half of all time spent online. The key is to find the right balance. Below are some tips to making the most of your business networking opportunities in the new year:

1) Strengthen the Old and Bond with the New: Your established contacts are going to be your biggest ambassadors. Figure out those whom you want to strengthen your relationships with and find opportunities to increase business potential. On the flip side, consider those contacts that you know, but getting to know better could be mutually beneficial. Make a point of scheduling one-on-one’s to talk.

2) Connect Online and Meet in Person: The social networking platforms offer significant opportunities to meet people outside your immediate circles. Start dialogs on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn and build a rapport. When you’re ready, pitch the idea of getting together in person (assuming the contact is local) to solidify the relationship. Many online groups will have already scheduled face-to-face meet-and-greets. Gather those business cards and jump right in!

3) Change Your Routine: If you’re an active business networker, you probably attend the same get-togethers each month. There’s nothing wrong with catching up with existing contacts, but you need to expand your base. Find networking groups that you haven’t attended in the past and seek ways to get involved. Actively refreshing your networking list is critical for consistent business growth.

Above all, be personable, open, and an active listener. People love to talk. Whether it’s a conversation on Twitter or an in-person coffee chat, the key is to engage.

What are some of your keys to finding the right balance between online and offline business networking?
