Six Tools to Help a Small Business Attain Its Goals

A Special Blog Post From: Bret Snyder

Over this past week I’ve been helping my kids get ready to head back to school.  It was funny as all my years of business operations and business coaching kicked in and I felt a bit like I was with a client, for just a few fleeting moments.  Maybe it’s the fact that my son is now in middle school and it not all just crayons, tissue boxes, and snacks anymore.

He needed a lot more planning and it was amazing to see our daughter fall right into step – she can do anything her brother can do, you know (usually better, if you ask her).

Anyhow, as we start mapping things out, where we needed to go to get these new school tools and supplies, and then bring them all together, I started thinking of how similar it was to working with any entrepreneur or startup operator and that lead me to handing some goods over to you all.

First, let’s agree that tools are there to make something easier.  Tools have been around for a few thousand years and their intention is to make a job or project easier to do and possibly expedite the time towards completion.

So, what do they make easier?  …or what do they expedite?  Let’s take the next step and say they expedite and assist in making goals come to fruition.

Next, how do we move towards our goals?  I had written a blog on goals and goal attainment a few months ago, and when I went back to review it, it makes even more sense (I’m so coachable at times – unless you ask my wife, at least).  In order to make goals realistic and attainable, we need to distill them to smaller tasks on a daily basis – in other words, if we want to sell 1.2M widgets this year, we need to sell and average of 100K each month, yes?  …or 25K per week.

Then we can start setting daily tasks, i.e. – calls out, emails, requests for referrals, surveys, etc.  Once we have daily tasks, we just need to measure and go do it.

We call this “winning the day” and it goes a bit like this:
1.      Win the day
If you can set your priorities and win the day, based on goals broken down to daily activities, go home, reward yourself, relax, and “turn work off.”

2.      Win the Week
If you can win three days of five, based on getting your daily activities completed for those three days, pat yourself on the back and have some great weekend time with your sports buddies, friends and/or family.

3.      Win the Month
Make it a goal to win three weeks of four in any given month, and mark that month off at the end.

4.      Win the Year
Winning eight months of the twelve in a year will see you accomplish most of your realistic goals inside of your ideal business scene.

If you were to win the year, you’d probably call yourself successful and meet most of your goals.
